About This Service
What Is Holistic Dentistry?
Holistic dentistry means looking at oral health within the context of the person receiving care. A tooth does not function separately from the gums, jaw muscles, airway, or daily habits around it. At Top Down Dental, this perspective guides conversations about prevention, restorative treatment, comfort, and long-term maintenance. Your goals and experiences matter alongside what we see during an examination. Our Los Gatos practice welcomes patients from San Jose, Silicon Valley, and surrounding Bay Area communities who want this broader approach to dental care.
Biological Dentistry and Whole-Person Care
Biological dentistry places particular attention on the interaction between dental materials, oral tissues, and your individual health considerations. We discuss your medical history, medications, previous dental experiences, and any known sensitivities before recommending treatment. Whole-person care also includes listening to concerns about clenching, jaw discomfort, breathing, sleep, or dental anxiety. These conversations help us understand your priorities and identify when dental evaluation or coordination with another health professional may be appropriate. We explain our findings rather than asking you to choose treatment without understanding the reasons.
Biocompatible Materials: Choosing With Your Health in Mind
Biocompatible materials are selected with attention to how they interact with living tissue and the requirements of the tooth being restored. Tooth-colored restorative options allow us to discuss alternatives to metal-containing fillings alongside strength, appearance, maintenance, and your material preferences. There is no single material that fits every person or every situation. The size of a restoration, the condition of the surrounding tooth, bite pressure, and known sensitivities all deserve consideration. Our goal is a clear, individualized discussion of those factors before you make a decision.
Biomimetic Materials and Preserving Natural Teeth
Biomimetic dentistry takes inspiration from the structure and function of a natural tooth. Enamel and dentin work together, and a restoration should be planned with attention to that relationship. Biomimetic materials and conservative restorative approaches focus on preserving sound tooth structure and rebuilding the areas that need repair. We consider the tooth’s remaining support, how the teeth meet, and how the restoration will be maintained. This is a planning philosophy rather than a promise that every damaged tooth can be restored in the same way.
Ozone Therapy in a Holistic Dental Plan
Ozone therapy is one of the approaches that may be discussed within your biological dental care plan. Ozone is a form of oxygen used in different dental preparations. Its role depends on the treatment site, your examination, and the goals of the procedure. It is considered as an adjunct to appropriate dental care, with a discussion of the intended application and its limitations. Different forms have different uses; they are not interchangeable, and a recommendation is based on your individual needs.
Ozone gas
Ozone gas may be applied locally in a controlled dental setting as part of a treatment plan involving a tooth or gum area. The dentist determines where and how it is used. Gas application is professionally managed, with attention to containment and avoiding inhalation.
Ozone oil
Ozone oil, also called ozonated oil, is an oil preparation that may be discussed for topical application to selected oral areas. If it is appropriate for your care, our team explains the specific product, purpose, and instructions rather than recommending a general home remedy.
Ozone water
Ozone water, or ozonated water, may be used for rinsing or irrigation in selected dental procedures. Your dentist explains how this application fits with the rest of your treatment. Ozone therapy does not replace an examination, necessary treatment of infection, or regular home hygiene.
Evaluating Infected or Previously Root Canal-Treated Teeth
If a tooth is painful, infected, or has previously received root canal treatment, we begin by evaluating its present condition. Symptoms, examination findings, relevant imaging, remaining tooth structure, and your treatment history help guide that discussion. Our holistic approach includes considering whether a tooth can be maintained or whether another plan is appropriate. A history of root canal treatment alone does not establish that a tooth is infected or needs removal. We explain the findings and available next steps in relation to your individual health priorities.

Plan Your Next Step
Bring your questions, any available dental records, and details about your material preferences or previous treatment. We will discuss your goals, evaluate your oral health, and explain a plan that connects immediate concerns with ongoing prevention. Contact Top Down Dental to schedule a holistic consultation and learn how biological dentistry can fit into your care.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are holistic and biological dentistry the same?
The terms overlap. Holistic dentistry emphasizes whole-person care, while biological dentistry places particular attention on dental materials, oral tissues, and individual health considerations. Top Down Dental incorporates both perspectives.
Does everyone need ozone therapy?
No. Ozone gas, oil, or water is considered according to the treatment site and your dental needs. Your dentist explains whether an application is appropriate and how it fits into the plan.
